All over England there are many festivals and events to celebrate the love for literature and books and as crime fiction lovers we are always looking for an occasion to share the love with other aficionados. One event that we will not miss (and neither should you) is the Deal Noir Crime Fiction Convention 2016, set in the very British sea town of Deal, Kent.
The one day conference, which will be held at Deal’s Landmark Centre on 2nd April, 2016 boasts of a programme full of activities, workshops, contests and talks for a varied criminal palate. The panel of speakers is very wide in terms of sub-genres of crime fiction (click here for the whole list of speakers attending) so, whether you like your crime to be psychological or a classic whodunit, there are many treats for you! Distinguished authors Yrsa Sigurdardottir, Dr John Curran, Alison Baillie and Piergiorgio Pullixi are all flying in especially from Iceland, Ireland, Switzerland and Sardinia respectively to talk about how crime fiction has shaped their careers.
The conference will be spearheaded by Susan Moody (former Chairman of the Crime Writers’ Association, member of the Detection Club and former President of the International Association of Crime Writers) and co-hosting with her will be Mike Linane. Check out the entire programme here. Personally, we can’t wait to hear John Curran talk about Agatha!
Something we have never seen attempted before at a crime festival is hearing what real life policeman and witnesses have to say about their involvement in real life crime. At Deal Noir, we will finally have some first hand information from professionals that deal with crime every day of their lives. The panel, called “The May The Force Be With You”, features policeman currently in service and former police officers who had experienced the 7/7 bombings, the vice squad and the Libyan Embassy shootings of 1974.
Another name worth mentioning is Linda Regan, “Hi-de-Hi” actress turned crime fiction author, who will speak in the “Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere” panel. An excellent inspiration for anyone taking part in the Flash Fiction Competition that Deal Noir is hosting this year; the goal is to write a crime fiction story in 50 words or less and the winner will be announced on the day of the event and will be given a secret special surprise! The closing date to enter the competition is 27th March, so if you’d like to participate, hurry and submit your story here!
Deal Noir will be the perfect event to meet the biggies of the crime fiction scene, thanks to “The Watching The Detectives Panel”. If you’re interested in the newer talent, the “The New Blood (Sweat and Tears)” panel will consist of authors who have had very successful debut novels published in the last year; they will be telling us how they approached the genre and how they managed to get published, so you better take notes! With “The Leading Ladies Panel”, the best of today’s female writers will discuss the long standing relationship between women and crime fiction. Of course, our beloved Agatha won’t be forgetten as Christie expert Dr John Curran and David Brawn from Harper Collins will be talking about her and how the covers of her books have shaped the book design industry.
And finally, you don’t want to miss the ultimate entertainment provided by Simon Brett, crime writer and former Detection Club president, who will perform a criminal cabaret entitled “Whydidnttheydunnit?” (we’re still giggling at his previous performance at Bodies From The Library 2015 conference!)
So, if you are a true crime fiction fan, you can’t miss what looks to be an absolute cracker of a crime festival!
